After vitreous separation from the retinal surface, a translucent membrane can arise and cause varying degrees of macular retina dysfunction. In the most severe form the membrane becomes crinkled and, then, contracts to cause puckering or underlying retina. (See below.) If the visual acuity is compromised to an intolerable level, microscopic guided vitrectomy with stripping of the membrane becomes necessary.
